Tina Nilsen-Hodges led the founding team of New Roots Charter School and has served as head of school since the school opened in September 2009. The seeds of Tina’s inspiration for New Roots were planted at Binghamton University, where she earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees and was a recipient of the Couper Fellowship for Excellence in Education. Certified as a NYS K-12 teacher, school building, and district leader, Tina taught in progressive and Montessori schools and educational programs before moving to EcoVillage at Ithaca in 2002 seeking a community of people interested in education for sustainability. She met founding board members Jason Hamilton and Peter Bardaglio while teaching sustainability education courses at Ithaca College. They have been working together to “grow New Roots” in Ithaca ever since! A lifelong resident of upstate New York, Tina is a passionate advocate for organic agriculture and sustainable food systems. Her husband is the lead teacher of a Montessori adolescent program. They have two sons, one who an aspiring farmer and chef, and one who wants to help people develop a powerful relationship with the natural world through adventure leadership.
